What is Generation Guiders?

Generation Guiders is a Community Based Organization (CBO) based in the constituency of Kitale/Kenya. It was founded in 2009 as a youth group and was officially registered as a CBO in Githurai in 2012 but moved operations to Kitale in August 2017. Its aim is to empower adolescent girls in the community and to provide safe and supportive spaces for girls to discuss their problems and learn from their peers.

Our endeavor is to inspire and empower adolescent girls to develop knowledge, skills and their status by increasingly exposing them to life-skills, sexual and reproductive health training and on how to curb gender based violence and to take hold of livelihood opportunities.

Why girls?

When girls are empowered, we all benefit. Investing in girls is a key to reducing poverty: girls who receive an education marry later, have fewer children, and are more likely to get healthcare for themselves and their children. Every year of schooling increases a girl’s future earnings by 10 – 20%. Investing in girls is also an investment into their children and extended family.

In the community today girls and women bear the brunt of poverty. They encounter major obstacles and discrimination in their lives, and they experience them early. Fighting poverty in our society requires focusing on girls and women to achieve quality.

Investing in girls is one of the smartest things we can do to promote a healthier, more prosperous world. More importantly, it’s the right thing to do. Every girl has the right to be in charge of her future and her fate, and we have the collective obligation to protect her rights and to promote her well-being.

"If we want to drive progress in the world, we need to put girls in the driver’s seat.”
